The children’s hospital in East Delhi, where a fire broke out Saturday night, leading to seven newborns losing their lives, was running despite its registration with the Directorate General of Health Services expiring nearly two months ago., officials said Sunday. The Delhi police had, earlier today, arrested Dr Naveen, the owner of the New Born Baby Care Hospital in Vivek Vihar. According to the Delhi Fire Services, the blaze erupted at the hospital at around 11.30 pm following which nine fire tenders were rushed to the site. The fire is suspected to have been caused by short-circuit.
Meanwhile,
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next kin of each deceased, news agency PTI reported.
“The fire tragedy at a hospital in Delhi is heart-rending. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this incredibly difficult time. I pray that those injured recover at the earliest,” Modi said in a post on X.
In a second such case, three individuals were killed in a fire that engulfed a residential building in the Krishna Nagar district of East Delhi during the early hours of Sunday. These incidents occurred shortly after a massive fire in Gujarat’s Rajkot city killed at least 27 people as a crowded game zone caught fire and the building collapsed.
